When you register for MacTypingTutor you will get a floppy disk with the latest version of the program. For the basic registration fee, you also get the largest data banks available at this time (for the typing prompts used in the program). These largest data banks include: 50,000 word spelling-checker dictionary, 100 pargraphs, 12,000 additional prompt words, and all possible letter combinations on the keyboard. Permanent score sheets are also provided for the FreeTyping module.
Free Tools. You will also get: 1) an editing tool to add and delete from the word and paragraph banks; 2) a second tool to alter the number of spaces used between sentences in the paragraph module. 3) a simple, surprise novelty-application.
Also included is the file "Electric Dvorak" free. It allows you to switch between your regular keyboard-layout and what many consider a more efficient keyboard-layout. Dvorak is now compatible with the first three modules of MacTypingTutor (Free Typing, GraphDrill, and WordDrill, using a facimili of the Dvorak keybaord for reference that you print from the file).
Another version of MacTypingTutor let's you work in Dvorak, only, within all modules, using a facimili, for reference, of the Dovorak keyboard that appears on screen. To register for this instead of the regular version write anywhere on the registration form "Dvorak version of MacTypingTutor not regular version."
MacTypingTutor also comes with a nicely written text-file manual. The following is a very brief version of the manual:
LetterClinic: trains your hands to feel for the "home" position and then jump to other keys. There are eleven different modes, ranging from super-easy to medium to very hard (as well as numbers and symbols), see "Options" menu.
FingerClinic: teaches which finger to use for typing each key on the keyboard; it works in automatic or manual.
WordDrill: prompts words, remembers errors, can prompt errors.
GraphDrill: prompts you to type paragraphs kept in GraphBank. Use menu commands to customize prompts.
Free Typing: Scores are kept for session . Tip: Press return-key twice to activate score-sheet manu-command. Then you don't have type a paragarph to see the score sheet. Spell checking now available in FreeTyping.
You can also customize how the program handles the typing prompts as well your typing. To do this use the commands in the Options and Modules Menus.
Modules 2 through 5 show various boxes on screen which provide information as you type. The left-most box shows a √ when you type correctly and "error" when you make one. It also on random occasions displays "%" correct, or a word of encouragement (which can be turned off in the registered version). The box that shows "timeOn" displays total time you've been with the program (on the right of the ' | ' marker) and shows total times you've been in particular modules (on the left of the ' | ' marker). Module 1 (FreeTyping) does not get this information because it uses a separate timer in its score sheet.
Closing note: MacTypingTutor is an actively-supported shareware program made available, for a reduced registration fee, by an educator. Within reason, the programmer will answer questions, through e-mail, that you may have about using MacTypingTutorial. :-)
